Statement of the Embassy of People's Republic of China in the Republic of Turkey
2008/05/19

A major earthquake jolted China's Sichuan Province at 2:28 p.m. May 12, Beijing time, which has caused a great loss of human lives and properties. By 12:00 a.m. May 19, the earthquake death toll across China rose to 34,073, 245,108 were injured, and 5,260 others remained buried as of 4 p.m. on Monday. According to the preliminary estimation, the direct economic losses caused by the disaster are over 20 billion dollars, and the disaster-stricken population is about 20 million.

Chinese government immediately started the Emergency Response Mechanism for disaster relief work after the earthquake. At present, a total of 150,000 soldiers, armed police and paramilitary personnel have been dispatched for disaster relief work. Countries all over the world offered assistance to the Chinese government and people soon after the Wenchuan earthquake. Leaders of Turkey have sent their message of sympathy to their Chinese counterparts, and 2 million dollars of cash assistance has been remitted by the Turkish government. All walks of life in Turkey have shown their sympathy, and given great help to people of the disaster-stricken area. Many people made calls or sent message of sympathy and donated for the disaster, hoping to do what they can to help the disaster relief work and the reconstruction after the quake. The Embassy of People's Republic of China in the Republic of Turkey thanks all those efforts and promises to send every blessing and donation to the quake-hit areas timely.

The damage extent of the earthquake is unprecedented because of the strength of the quake (according to the latest data, the earthquake measures 8 on the Richter scale). Now the condition in the quake-hit area is still very dangerous and urgent, and what are most needed are medical equipment, medicine and tents which can be used by the victims as contemporary shelters. Organizations and individuals in Turkey are most welcome to provide the above-mentioned help.

The Embassy of People's Republic of China in the Republic of Turkey once again expresses appreciation to the Turkish government and people who show their love and care, and offer help to the quake-hit area. Your love and care to the people of the disaster-stricken area are encouraging them to overcome the quake. We believe that, under the full support of 1.3 billion Chinese compatriots and countries all over the world, the people in the quake-hit area will overcome the current pains and difficulties, and finally build a better homeland.
