|China-Turkey relations in 2004|
In recent years, the Turkish Government has incorporated attachment to relations with China into its platform with continued high-level exchanges, expanded economic partnership and fruitful cooperation in other areas.
In 2004, China-Turkey friendly cooperation in the political, economic, military and other fields grew stronger.
Bilateral political relations enjoyed a sound development, featuring frequent exchanges at a11 levels. On November 18-20, Huang Ju, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CCCPC and Vice Premier of the State Council, visited Turkey. He met with President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan respectively and held talks with Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul. Vice Premier Huang reiterated China's commitment to stronger relations with Turkey, expressed willingness to further cooperation with Turkey on the current basis and appreciated Turkey's adherence to one China policy and its understanding of and support for China's efforts to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Turkish side indicated its continued pledge to pursue the one China policy and its willingness to strengthen bilateral cooperation in such fields as transportation, telecommunications, energy, hi-tech and tourism. During the 59th Session of the UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met with Turkish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Gul. Furthermore, Head of CCCPC International Department Wang Jiarui, Vice Minister of the National Development and Reform Commission Ou Xinqian, Vice Minister of Public Security Yang Huanning, Vice Minister of Civil Affairs Yang Yanyin, Vice Minister of Personnel Hou Jianliang, Vice Minister of Culture and Curator of the Palace Museum Zheng Xinmiao, Assistant Commerce Minister Huang Hai, Deputy Commissar of Armed Police Force Lieu. General Zhang Yu, and Vice President of the National School of Administration Zhang Xiuxue visited Turkey successively. On the Turkish side, Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul, Justice Minister Cemil Cicek, Education Minister Huseyin Celik, Deputy Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs in charge of bilateral political affairs Baki Ilkin, Deputy Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs in charge of economic affairs Alev Kilig, Governor Muammer Guler of the Istanbul Province visited China successively. Furthermore, the Turkey-China Friendship Group under the Grand National Assembly, Turkey-China Friendship Association, Justice and Development Party (AKP), the Republic People's Party and the Workers' Party also sent delegations to China.
Two-way trade continued to grow rapidly as the level of economic and technological cooperation rose gradually. In May, China-Turkey Economic and Trade Promotion Group was convened in Ankara. In July, China Metallurgical Equipment Corporation signed a US$48 million contract with Turkey's Erdemir Steel Company on export of coke oven, gas tank and flatcar for steel transport.
