China has indisputable sovereignty over South China Sea islands: spokesman
2011/06/30

BEIJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- China has indisputable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and their surrounding waters, a Chinese official said Wednesday.

Safeguarding the sovereignty is a common responsibility for Chinese living on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, Yang Yi, spokesman with the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, said at a press conference in Beijing.

Commenting on Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou's remarks which seeks a peaceful resolution of cross-Strait conflict, Yang said the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations in the past three years had indeed benefited people on both sides.

The mainland hopes that the two sides can continue to maintain the political consensus and handle differences carefully to promote further development of cross-Strait relations, he said.

Tsai Ing-wen, chairperson of Taiwan's major opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), had previously said that her party was willing to negotiate with the mainland for a long-term interactive framework.

Yang said the premise of developing cross-Strait relations was based on the one-China consensus and the relationship had never been state-to-state.

"If not adhere to the one-China framework and insists on a Taiwan-independence stance, it will jeopardize the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and how then could both sides establish a long-term interactive framework?" the spokesman said.
