On May 18, 2005, State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan met with visiting President of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas.

Abbas briefly introduced the current situation in the Middle East. Tang said that China admires the active efforts of Abbas to promote the Middle East peace process and hopes Palestine seize the opportunities, continue to adhere to the overall direction of reconciliation through negotiations and try to get greater sympathy and support from the international community.
